Thanks. I was actually curious about the number of attendants from main players like YKP, TDP, BKP, CTP etc. I will find out myself and speculate.

the fact that the schools and colleges in the north were closed for mid-term allowed the significant participation of the t/c youth. but still many people left their work to attend in the north. also more generally t/cs have a more militant political culture. they have often protests and strikes, unlike in the south.

80 people in the south felt like a punch. Although I had no idea that the wish for reunification was still so remarkably strong in the north (where I assume people also work at 10am), I wonder why GCs were so few, taking even into account the population difference.

Andreas attributed the fact to the spoiled, settled GC mentality, and the fact that we don't care for a solution, as well as to the politicians who don't do anything worthwhile "to stir up the waters" in the community.

I would like to elaborate on that.

Politicians on both sides stir the waters continuously with their rivalries, but in a seemingly worthless way when it comes to the community.

As far as the people are concerned, one might say that the TCs are not spoiled enough. Or that information about the even was far more intensive in the south. Can it be though, that the GCs were so few not just because of plain ignorance, but also because of a strong sense of insecurity when it comes to knowing what they support, because of late "teaching" and cultivating by the leaders? It's clear that TCs have a much clearer picture of what there is and what they therefore want.

Because I doubt that the GCs have such confidence in the actions of our leader and therefore chose to relax.

I apologise for not using English, but I just felt the need to express a strong feeling that I had, which as we all know, cannot be expressed better than in the language you were brought up with.

I'm wondering what will come next from the rejectionists.
"The UN military is an occupying force and should be removed from the island"?
It follows doesn't it? If the UN is just a lair of conspirators then what are it's soldiers doing here?
And even further, all those UN resolutions. Were they really honest or part of the worldwide conspiracy? Maybe they have meanings we haven't deciphered yet.

strovolioti,
we have canceled my dear "our subscription to the ressurrection" so this is the world in which we can play..and we and they [the politicians] have to play..

even though i didn't know what the excuse would be, some kind of "explosion" from the rejectionist networks should have been expected i think..so when i turned to sigma yesterday night and heard the tape of the overblown reactions to the visit to the t/c "administrative headquarters"/palace [of the "president",the "vice president"..see..:)..it is a question of signs], i was curious as to the follow up..today the newspapers seem calmer..well it is a more even split..
i could say also of course that the t/c side wanted again to assert its autonomy...and then..i feel i must say this even if it offends g/c who are still hooked into the grand symbolism of the rooms and the houses..it is not polite to ask somebody to move out of his office to meet with you..as human being he deserves an office..:)..

it would have been a good idea if the incident didn't happen..but then something would have appeared..
let's leave it there..i saw constantinou's comment in politis today and he is getting the absurdity [in relation to reality] of the sign wars in its proper [ie humourous] context...

but let me come to the conjuncture..the u.n. wanted to appear and lay down the framework of the international organizations position - wanting a resolution which [another significant part censored, omited in media reports] would act as a symbol/sign globally...
ban ki mun was polite in repeating that the process belongs to us..but beyond his individual existence he was also conveying a sense of "get on with it" from the bureaucratic organization which he represents..which is currently only hinted at, in discussions over the un force in cyprus, but it is there as a reality - and clearly in a more pressing manner since 2004..the u.n. are the resolutions of course..but also it is ghali ideas, annan plan etc..so..there are of course 2 entities in cyprus..two communities..a president and a nominal vice president [even as a non recognized vice president of the republic, he must have an office i guess..]...
i don't know who organized and what the whole thing was with the arrangements..but as a society, north and south, we have to learn to live together and manage these spectacular moments in which signs can have multiple intepretations..
brecht's insistence on emotional distance is libaratory in this context i think..

there were interesting moments also i think..
if, as things show, the hysteria [and the consequent tapes of the media] over the turkish/cypriot proposals seems to be over, then there is a significant move indeed..
if the rotating [call it "ek peritropis" to avoid multiple intepretations again] presidency and especially the cross-voting are agreed then, this visit signaled a new stage by confirming via the presence of the un secretary of a new "convergence" [nice sign..:)]..

and i must confess that i am sometimes surprised with how deaf people can be when they are conditioned to hear what obsses them..here is talat [seems like a polite gentle man] confirming that the whole discussion is in the un framework..and christofias chiding the media for a basic mode of politeness.."at least have the decency to say welcome to a visitor" he said basically..and his rather dispirkasmeni [find the english word] response to the cliche question about reminding the un secretary about the un resolutions, made me smile...
seems like some people would go to someone's job and tell them what they should be doing..it is hilarious when looked from outside cyprus..we have all these potential un secretaries who seem to know more about the man at the job..:)..
at least christofias tried to make up for the funniness of the local ritual..
there was also a good rapport of christofias and talat as imagery..in the news of course it was buried under cries of "vourate yitoni"..but then, images may have their impact..hopefully..

and a final comment on the adouloti kerinia senario..when i heard the slogans against christofias, i smiled..well, i thought, leftists will have to forget now the other thing/s since they are reminded by koulias and the neofascist slogans, of the thugs murdering their historical predecessors..
signs...

we will see

Andreas and sinigoros, kindly respect the fact that this is an English language article…

I am also impressed by the large number of northern Cypriots!

However, all in all I believe that the visit of the Secretary General has not really contributed towards a solution.

It is not just this issue of the visit to Talat’s office, which as usually has blown out of all reasonable proportion in the south.

It is the fact that the two negotiators have not moved far enough.

If the opposite had happened, if Christofias was not so relaxed with the time issue, then we would either have more real progress and therefore the visit would be really useful, or the Turkish intransigence would be plain enough, and no visit would have taken place.

In either way there is no quick fix anymore, and I am honestly wondering what are the chances for a solution anymore.

The bi-communal activists deserve to be supported by all means. Thank you all for the significant work towards peace and reunification. Maybe you are not building a crowd, but you can still achieve a lot, if you raise constantly your voices against the division.
